homecoming | prom

Somehow I never ended up going to a dance with a "boyfriend," only buddies. In retrospect, I probably had a lot more fun. No pressure, no relationship drama, no expectations.

Homecoming: Alan was and still is one of the funniest people I ever met. His Mom was from Japan and made sushi for a bunch of our friends, then I drove everyone to the dance in my parents big white obnoxious cadillac. We went to an after party, where he immediately started getting hammered. I was a prude with an early curfew, so once we secured a ride home for him, we said our goodnights and I headed home. I remember by the time I left he had his shirt completely unbuttoned (the jacket had been ditched much earlier) and was wearing his tie like a headband.

Prom: I went with Sean, piano prodigy and friend from choir. He was a really quiet guy, and I think that night was the most I ever heard him speak. We met some other friends for dinner, then the dance, then hung out at the all-night diner with a bunch of friends. Pretty sedate, I know, but not boring.

I was requested to put up a sort of pageant montage.. I know this isn’t anything like a cool montage but it’s just a thing I love doing! This pageant took place in Kansas City, MO March 18-20. I won the teen division. It was judged by model agents from NYC, LA, and Chicago – seeking model potential. The competition consisted of swimwear/active wear, evening gown, and interview. This is the short version video of the 2012 Miss Hawaii USA pageant that was held on November 13, 2011 at the Ala Moana Hotel. Pageant directors Eric Chandler and Takeo Kobayashi of the fashion design house 2 Couture presented a wonderful mix of evening pageantry combining the Miss division and the Teen division with a Mister Hawaii Competition. The young men gave the ladies ample time to move from casual, to swimsuit, to evening gowns. A young man, Ari Dalbert, sang two wonderful songs to highlight the evening’s fashion/pageant show. Thin women look good in just about any style of dress, so dress for the plus sized girls and the thin ones may not look their very best, but they won’t look as bad as a plus sized girl in the wrong dress!!!

Apparently, women line up at around 3:00am for the store to open at 8:00am. There are usually over a thousand women waiting in line– but only a few hundred are brides. The rest are the bride’s “helpers” she has recruited, usually her bridal party and mother. Once the doors open, women run into the store and strip the racks bare within 60 seconds. The brides and their helpers grab as many gowns as they can, run into a corner, and the brides strip down in the middle of the store to try on dresses! Most of them wear bike shorts and sports bras or a bikini, but some wear their bridal lingerie. The brides and their helpers usually wear “Team So and So” shirts to make it easier to find each other amidst the crowd, and they walk around with a sign that says, “Size 8″ or whatever the bride wears (so that others will know what size they are looking for and give them a dress in that size if they no longer want it). Some brides trade dresses with each other, all in the hope of getting the perfect fancy designer dress for super cheap.

Have you ever been to this? I was thinking this might be a fun event for my bridesmaids and mother, but was wondering if it was TOO chaotic? Personal experiences?
If we would go, it would be the one in Chicago.

It all depends on what Filene’s Basement you go to. I’ve been to the one in NYC and I would never do it again. It’s just too chaotic. And not what I want my dress experience to be. I want to sit on a couch and sip water while they bring the dresses to me.
